Elaine Sutton is the affilate's Deputy Director of Community Engagement. Previously, she served as the affiliate's Legal Support Coordinator, responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Legal Department's Intake Complaint Unit (ICU) which includes providing management, oversight, and supervision for its Internship program during both the academic and summer terms. The internship program is comprised of 2 undergraduate teams (in-house and remotely located) representing Washington University (Wash. U), Saint Louis University (SLU), Webster University, University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL), and Harris Stowe State University (HSSU). In addition, Elaine recently assumed responsiblity for planning, implementing, and executing 2 new sections within the Legal Department's ICU; Continuing Education Section (EDU) and Digital & Multimedia Evidence Section (DME).
Before coming to the ACLU, Elaine was Assistant Project Director/Training & Technical Assistance Director for Syracuse University’s ADA Center, where she was responsible for developing, providing, coordinating, and promoting training, technical assistance, and informational materials for a wide range of audiences on the Americans with Disabilities Act (and related federal legislation). Prior to her appointment at Syracuse University, Elaine served as Program Manager/Volunteer Administrator with the Single Parent Alliance and Resource Center.
Elaine has also worked as an independent grant reviewer and consultant, providing services to numerous community groups on providing training and technical assistance to state and federal agencies, as well as community and faith–based organizations on building collaborative partnerships and networks to address the reintegration needs of the formerly incarcerated. One of Elaine’s areas of interest area is reuniting individuals and their families affected by incarceration.
Elaine graduated from the Executive Faculty Development Program of Morehouse School of Medicine's National Primary Care Center in Atlanta, Georgia, in May 2008. The focus of her year-long study centered on the development of a public health curriculum titled, “Advancing the Development of Healthy Life-Course Outcomes for Single Parent Families.”
Elaine is the Executive Producer/Host of “The Justice Beat Talk Show,”. A weekly 1-hour digital broadcast dedicated to informing, educating, empowering, and equipping family members and friends of incarcerated/formerly incarcerated love ones on how to boldly and confidently advocate for the health and well-being of their loved one. The Show is supported by its Next Generation Media Internship Program otherwise known as NxGen Media.
