ACLU-MO Complaint Investigation Specialist Intern

(Remote, 14-Week Academic Credit-Based Program)

 

Overview:

The American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri (ACLU-MO) invites dedicated undergraduate students to apply for a remote internship within our Investigative Complaint Unit (ICU). This 14-week academic credit-bearing internship offers an opportunity to actively contribute to defending and advancing civil liberties and constitutional rights through an investigative process that evaluates the legitimacy of allegations lodged by Missourians and submitted via our complaint management system.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the intake and preliminary review of civil liberties complaints, ensuring accurate documentation of allegations.
  • Conduct thorough investigations by analyzing complaint details, reviewing relevant documents, and corroborating information through research and interviews as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with team members to assess the credibility and validity of allegations, ensuring a fair and impartial process.
  • Utilizing our internal complaint management system, maintain organized records of all investigative steps and findings, complying with confidentiality protocols.
  • Contribute to compiling an end-of-year qualitative/quantitative report specific to type of complaints processed, etc.
  • Participate in the cross-training of future cohorts of CIS(s).
  • Where appropriate provide information, referrals, and resources to complainants when it has been identified the complaint does not meet our priority areas.

Eligibility and Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled undergraduate student.
  • Access to a personal laptop/computer, reliable internet connection, and a dedicated workspace for remote work.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and ethical conduct.
  • Demonstrated interest in civil rights, civil liberties, or related fields.

Time Commitment:

  • During the academic year: 2-3 days/week, totaling approximately 10-12 hours/week.
  • During summer months: 3-4 days/week, totaling approximately 15-20 hours/week.

  • Training and Orientation Schedule:
  • Fall Term: Virtual orientation in the third week of September
  • Winter/Spring Term: Virtual orientation in the second week of December
  • Summer Term: Virtual orientation in the fourth week of April

This internship provides invaluable experience for students interested in civil rights advocacy, investigative processes, and public interest law, all while supporting the mission of the ACLU-MO.
