Madelyn Murphy joined the ACLU of Missouri as the Investigative Researcher for the Deaths in Custody research project in the Winter of 2019. She is a writer and researcher for the Deaths in Custody report that will be published in 2020. Before joining the ACLU, Madelyn participated in social justice activities and programming in the Bronx, New York. She graduated from Fordham University with a double major in Social Work and American Studies where she did extensive research on the history of incarceration in the United States with a focus on formal graduate degree programs for incarcerated individuals. Following graduation, Madelyn moved to Seattle, Washington to do a year of service with Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest and served in a housing first program.  Today, Madelyn is following her passion for mass incarceration reform and community vitality by pursuing her masters degree in social work concentrating on social and economic development at the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis.
